Research overview

Two main areas of research: fluid mechanics, and the history of mathematics and its applications.

Fluid mechanics : mainly concerned with wave motion and hydrodynamic stability theory. This has involved such topics as:

- currents driven by nonlinear water waves and wind (of interest in oceanography),

- instability of boundary-layer flows (of importance in aerodynamics),

- nonlinear wave interactions in oscillating containers,

- exact solutions and instabilities of vortical flows with curved streamlines and time-periodicity.

See the Fluid mechanics and Nonlinear Evolution Equations and Vortex Dynamics Research group websites for more information.

History of mathematics : focus mainly on the late 18th and early 19th centuries, with particular emphasis on Scottish-born or Scottish-based mathematicians.
