Research overview

Teaching 2019-2020
MN2001 Management and Society
MN5470 Managing Human Resources

My research interests are twofold. First, I focus on employment relations in voluntary sector organisations. I am particularly interested in the unintended consequences of HRM, precarious work and employee wellbeing in the context of austerity. I am currently looking at the hybrid roles of front-line managers and the sustainability of the social care workforce. Second, I am interested in questions concerning the role of philanthropy in the voluntary sector and the impact of professionalisation in philanthropic organisations. My research is situated within the Centre for the Study of Philanthropy & Public Good (CSPPG), of which I am an Associate Director and currently involved in exploring the opportunities and challenges of philanthropy.

My research on managing employees in voluntary organisations was published as a book in the Routledge Studies in the Management of Voluntary and Non-Profit Organizations. As a member of the Academy of Management, Association for Research on Nonprofits and Voluntary Action, and the European Group for Organizational Studies, I present regularly at these conferences.
