Research overview

Barbara Townley is Chair of Management. She has taught at universities in the UK including Edinburgh, Warwick and Lancaster and the University of Alberta in Canada and  has published widely in leading North American and European management and organization studies journals. Her previous research includes a Foucauldian critique of human resource management and work on performance appraisal and performance measures, while her current area of research is the mediation between artistic and commercial interests in the creative industries. She is principal investigator on an ESRC £1.5m Capacity Building Cluster grant, "Capitalising on Creativity"; co-investigator on an AHRC £4m Knowledge Exchange grant, "Design in Action", led by Dundee University; and a co-investigator on an AHRC £4m project on "CREATe"--copyright, creativity, regulation, enterprise and technology, led by the University of Glasgow. She is Director of the Institute for Capitalising on Creativity, a pan-Scottish university consortium for the study of creative industries, www.capitalisingoncreativity.ac.uk
