Research overview

Mr Wolfe’s research focuses on the Goths, Germanic barbarians who impinge upon many aspects of Late Antiquity.  Through their 4th-century version of the New Testament, they are relevant to Biblical Studies.  By their involvement in post-Nicene Trinitarian controversy, they intrude into Patristics.  The Goths’ political and military movements provide the historical backdrop to significant texts such as St Augustine’s City of God.  Furthermore, the Gothic language is the earliest Germanic language to be widely attested, and is therefore foundational to reconstructing Proto-Germanic, and through it, Proto-Indo-European.
