Research overview

I work on poetry of all periods, but particularly on Old English (or Anglo-Saxon), and on modernist and twentieth-century poetry. I've written about the influence of Old English on modern writers and poets, and have recently worked on the 2007 Robert Zemeckis film of Beowulf, as well as on Seamus Heaney's use of Beowulf in his poem 'Helmet', a response to the events of 9/11. I am currently working on Beowulf and Apocalypse, and on a short lyric which is often argued to be the first surviving poem in Scots. I have also published in the Guardian on why Tony Blair chose Ivanhoe as his Desert Island Disc book.
