Research overview

Seabed sediments are diverse in composition and have signficant but variable carbon storgae potential. Carbon storage within seabed sediments has been attributed as a climate regulaion servive over geological timescales. My research aims to improve our understanding of the spatial distribution of organic carbon within the surifical marine sediments of Scotland's Continental Shelf. I am looking at developing new techniques for mapping sedimentary organic carbon based on sediment type and acoustic backscatter; as well as creating a national inventory for sedimentary carbon using contemporary and archived seabed sediment samples. This output may help to inform planning strategies of this important natural stock.
