Research overview

My current research trajectories are:

(1) International relations and UN Peace Support Operations (theory and practice): my continuing research interests include international relations theory; UN peacekeeping; peace and conflict resolution; global institutions and the nébuleuse (United Nations, World Bank, IMF, WTO); North-South relations; the global political economy; the politics of HIV/AIDS; and international human rights.  Indeed the Haitian, Indian, Liberian and UK focus of my work equips me to make a valuable area studies contribution to the Department.

(2) The ‘politics’ of race and ethnicity in contemporary Britain, particularly post- 9/11 and 7/7: the theory and politics of racism, racial equality, multiculturalism and secularism; ethnic identities, national identities and the 'second generation'; comparisons within and between Western Europe and North America; the politics of being Muslim in the West; Islamic political ‘radicalism’; and media constructions and depictions of minority ethnic and religious groups.

(3) Critical theory, human rights, globalisation and global ethics: with respect to human rights, globalisation and global ethics include their complex interrelationship in theory and practice; the politics of international human rights; critical theories (especially social constructionism); power; social movements and articulations of resistance in the South.
