Research overview

Dr Gani's research focuses on three interrelated areas: US and European empires in the Middle East and Asia, with particular focus on US-Syrian relations; anti-colonial/ decolonial history and political thought; and the relationship between ideologies and social movements. She is currently working on the reproduction of coloniality in postcolonial states, drawing upon Fanonian thought with particular reference to Syria and Egypt. Her second project is focusing on the legacy of US imperialist ideology in contemporary US policies towards Syria and the Middle East.

She welcomes PhD students researching post/decolonial thought and race critique; Syria; US empire in the Middle East; anti-colonial history & ideology in the Middle East and South Asia; race and citizenship in Britain and France; Islamic political thought.
