Research overview

Under the supervision of Gavin Hopps, my current research focuses on the intersection of theology, philosophy, and film. Particularly, I’m exploring the oeuvre of Belgium filmmakers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne via the hermeneutics of Paul Ricoeur and phenomenological film theory of André Bazin, suggesting that the Dardennes' films are post-secular cinematic parables. In crafting a theological aesthetics of cinema, I’m interested in how movies affect and inform the viewer’s theological and moral imagination, that is, how film can truly do theology, not merely depict it.

My research interests and areas of expertise include:

  • Theology/Religion and the Arts, Theological Aesthetics
  • Theology and Film
  • Continental Philosophy, esp. Phenomenology, Hermenetics, & Existentialism
  • Christian Ethics
  • Latinx & Black Liberation Theologies
  • Film Theory and Criticism, Film-Philosophy
  • Popular Culture and Media Studies
  • Church Pastoral Ministry and Leadership
  • Spiritual Formation of Children and Youth
