Research overview

I study the formation of calcium carbonate in the ocean and how the structure and composition of this mineral can reflect past environmental conditions and provide information on seawater chemistry at the time of CaCO3 precipitation. I am particularly interested in the element exchange reactions between Ca2+ and other divalent cations in calcite and aragonite. These metals and their isotopic signatures in marine carbonates are able to provide insight into CaCO3 precipitation rates, the saturation state of seawater relative to this mineral and, potentially, the associated partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2).
