Research at St Andrews

Morag Allan Campbell

Research overview

My research explores puerperal insanity, the nineteenth century diagnosis of madness or mental illness associated with childbirth, looking at the diagnosis in a Scottish context, and in particular focussing on perceptions and understandings in the Forfarshire area.  My study investigates how far the diagnosis, and indeed the occurrence of postnatal mental illness as a condition in itself, was recognised and supported by medical practitioners in this area, charting the course of the diagnosis through the course of the nineteenth and into the twentieth century.
