Research at St Andrews

Robbie David John Fitzpatrick

Research overview

My research explores current and future possibilities for reductions in energy, material and water throughput across the creation, maintenance and operation of golf courses and facilities. Using ethnographic fieldwork and key-informant interviews with practicioners and researchers from an array of fields, the research brings more thought to bear on golf's environmental, political and social challenges, and begins building a spectrum of practical proposals based on common-sense strategies and cutting-edge advances in the theory and practice of sustainability. By anchoring a strong sustainability lens to this participatory, 'socio-technical' framework, the research deepens and widens the scope of innovation for golf, and explores how it can enhance the integration, diffusion and adoption of appropriate technologies from other industries and sectors.
