Abstract

Thermogravimetric analyses of(Pb,Cu) 1212 cuprates show two stages of oxygen loss on heating. If samples are heat-treated at temperatures above the first stage of oxygen lass (@400 in air) they are superconducting. In this study we demonstrate that the second stage of oxygen loss (@900 in air) is associated with decomposition of the 1212 structure, resulting in an ''SrCuO2''-type phase and a 0223-related phase. In most previous studies, temperatures in excess of this decomposition temperature have been utilised to synthesise, sinter or optimise the (Pb,Cu)1212 cuprate.
