Abstract

Examining the treatment of Scotland in Shakespeare's 'Macbeth', Johnson's 'Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland' and Woolf's 'To the Lighthouse', this chapter argues that major English writers portray Scotland as ruined and 'other'; it highlights the lack of imaginative interest in Britishness on the part of major creative writers from England, and sees this as an significant aspect of the weakening of commitment to Unionism in Scotland and England.
