Abstract

The enormous consumption of ammonia worldwide drives endless developments in the ammonia production process, along with the attempts to overcome several drawbacks in the conventional Haber-Bosch process. Electrocatalytic membrane reactors have been proposed as a promising process to inherit the thermodynamic limitation and severe working conditions in the Haber-Bosch process. The ammonia production using this type of membrane reactors is discussed in this chapter. The advantages of membrane reactors over traditional catalytic process are first proposed. The chapter then discusses in detail component requirements, types of membrane reactors, catalytic mechanisms on electrocatalysts, material designs, and operating conditions.
