Pope Francis Visit to Myanmar and Bangladesh (2017): Inter-Faith Dialogue within Ethnic Cleansing

Research output: Research - peer-reviewArticle

School/Research organisations

This paper examines faith and international affairs within the context of Pope Francis’ visit to Myanmar and Bangladesh in November 2017 using Vatican archives. This visit followed an international outcry for the ethnic cleansing that was taking place within the country. Pope Francis outlined the international preoccupation for the actions of the Burmese government against the Rohingya, particularly within his speech to the Burmese government. Further, he called upon Buddhists to contribute to ‘a democratic order’ where ‘religious differences need not be a source of division or distrust’ but a force for nation building. This paper emphasizes the role of faith and religious communities within an international order that tends to separate religion and politics, a separation that does not exist within most rural communities within Asia.
