Superconductivity in reduced metal titanates

Abstract

he electrical and magnetic behaviour of the reduced magnesium titanate spinel solid solution (MgTi2O4-Mg2TiO4) has been studied as functions of temperature and composition. Across the solid solution, the average oxidation state of Ti changes from +3 to +4. An electrical transition in the system has been reported for values of x=3.265, such that resistance in the samples falls below measurable limits. The temperature of this transition, which resembles superconductivity, is 50 K.

Critical current behaviour and diamagnetism dependent on field have been observed in the system; however, in contrast to electrical data which has a Tc of 50 K, the highest observed Tc of diamagnetism to date is 7 K. These observations are consistent with superconductivity in the system to at least 7 K; electrical data suggest much higher Tc values of up to 50 K may be possible.
