Time-frequency fine structure of dolphin whistles

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contribution

Abstract

The analysis of marine mammal sounds has been a subject of considerable interest for a number of years. The tool of choice for revealing the timefrequency characteristics of these sounds has been the spectrogram (sonogram). The timefrequency resolution trade-offs inherent in the spectrogram do not permit the examination of both time and frequency fine structure, whereas the newer time-frequency distributions do provide a considerably improved result. Comparisons of spectrogram, Wigner distribution and RID results are presented in this paper.
