Abstract

This chapter examines a number of expansions in Targum Jonathan (c. 4th century C.E.) that add depth and dimension to the description of the celestial creatures in Ezekiel’s vision of the merkaḇâ. The aim is to reflect upon the angelology reflected in their content and its relationship to other Early Jewish texts, especially the wider Targumic traditions. It will be suggested that, although they conform to contemporary notions about angelic beings in certain of their details, the expansions represent an essentially unique expression of Jewish thought regarding the angelic creatures, their nature and their tasks.
